Raducanu reached the quarter-finals in her first clay WTA tour event in Stuttgart

Emma Raducanu’s victory in the Madrid Open capped a day of British triumph that included wins for Dan Evans and wildcard Jack Draper.

Raducanu, 19, defeated Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-1.

Evans won just his second clay-court match of the season in the opening round. Defeating Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 6-3 6-4.

As a wildcard, Draper defeated accomplished clay-courter Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 6-3.

Raducanu, competing on clay for the first time, advances to the third round. Where she will face another Ukrainian, Anhelina Kalinina.

“I’m quite pleased with my performance,” Raducanu stated.

“Marta is an excellent opponent; I knew it would be a difficult battle. I went out there intending to be extremely aggressive, and it paid off.”

After only five months with her coach Torben Beltz. Also, the British number one began working with LTA head of women’s coaching Iain Bates this week.

Naomi Osaka, a four-time major champion, was lost 6-3 6-1 by Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo due to an Achilles issue.

Evans will face each of two Jenson Brooksby or Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round, while Draper will face Andrey Rublev of Russia.

The British men’s number one, Cameron Norrie, will take on Korean qualifier Kwon Soonwoo in his first-round match on Monday.

Wildcard Andy Murray, a two-time winner of the Madrid Open. Will open his campaign against Dominic Thiem of Austria, returning from a wrist injury.
